There's a long American tradition of furniture made directly from raw twigs or sticks. Willow-twig and the substantial Adirondack style are two well-known types of rustic furniture. Paul Ruhlmann teaches and works in a style that's closer to Adirondack. He gathers saplings of red maple and buckthorn, peels them, joins them by making tenons with a tool he invented and finishes them simply. Ruhlmann makes all kinds of furniture, but is noted for his beautiful chairs with refined Shaker lines and woven seats.
