Making Rustic Furniture with Paul Ruhlmann (VHS)

    014024

There's a long American tradition of furniture made directly from raw twigs or sticks. Willow-twig and the substantial Adirondack style are two well-known types of rustic furniture. Paul Ruhlmann teaches and works in a style that's closer to Adirondack. He gathers saplings of red maple and buckthorn, peels them, joins them by making tenons with a tool he invented and finishes them simply. Ruhlmann makes all kinds of furniture, but is noted for his beautiful chairs with refined Shaker lines and woven seats. This video is about the entire process of building rustic furniture, from selecting the parts of your project from raw sticks (and steam bending posts when necessary) to making joints, finishing and weaving.
