<H2 align=3Dcenter>The Purpose and Use of a 4-Jaw Chuck</H2></FONT>
<P>There are two types of 4-jaw chucks: independent jaw chucks and=20
self-centering chucks. Sherline offers both.</P><B><I><FONT =
color=3D#0000ff>
<P>INDEPENDENT JAW CHUCKS...</B></I></FONT><BR>4-jaw independent jaw =
chucks have=20
four advantages over a 3-jaw chuck. 1) They can be used to hold =
irregular shaped=20
parts. 2) With the use of a dial indicator, they can be used to center =
parts=20
with a great deal of accuracy. 3) 4-jaw chucks can be used to =
deliberately hold=20
a part off center; and 4) They can clamp stock in a tighter grip. This =
is a=20
valuable asset when machining cams, crankshafts and other similar parts. =
The=20
disadvantage of the 4-jaw chuck is that the jaws must be individually =
set,=20
adding considerable time to bar stock setups.</P>
<P>Like the Sherline 3-jaw chucks, the 4-jaw chucks can be used to clamp =

externally or internally. The grip range (size of part that can be held =
in the=20
chuck) is noted below for each chuck.</P>
<P>Although we recommend the purchase of the 3-jaw chuck to make the =
Models=20
4000A, 4400A or 4500A lathe easier to use for standard lathe projects, =
the 4-jaw=20
chuck could be considered the accessory that could add the most =
versatility to=20
your machine. However, if you have definite projects in mind where you =
feel the=20
4-jaw chuck would be more useful, or if you already own a 3-jaw chuck, =
the "A=20
package" lathes may be ordered with the 4-jaw substituted for the 3-jaw =
upon=20
special request.</P>
<P><FONT color=3D#0000ff><B><I>SELF-CENTERING =
CHUCKS...</I></B></FONT></P>
<P>Self-centering chucks are designed to have all the jaws move in =
unison. The=20
jaws are driven by a spiral scroll when the knurled ring is turned. Self =

centering chucks will never duplicate the accuracy that can be attained =
with=20
jaws that are moved independently, but they will usually "get the job =
done",=20
saving a machinist much time and effort. Its main purpose is to quickly =
center=20
and hold square or round stock. The disadvantages are that the material =
must be=20
quite accurately round or square for all four jaws to grip properly, and =

absolute centering accuracy cannot be achieved because the jaws cannot =
be=20
individually adjusted. Sherline offers both 2.5" and 3.1" self-centering =
4-jaw=20
chucks. These are offered only in a 3/4-16 spindle thread to fit =
Sherline=20
machines and are not available in metric threads for older Unimat and =
other=20

<P>Clean chips from the jaw slots with a brush and add lubrication =
