Handplanes made in America prior to 1941 are of superior quality to most planes made today. Thousands of these old planes can still be found at flea markets, garage sales, and antique stores and many are well worth the effort and time it takes to reclaim them. In this video, woodworking teacher and author, Ernie Conover demonstrates how to make a plane look and work like new-from flattening the sole to restoring the Japanning. You'll learn how far to take it apart and how to adjust it after it's put back together. He includes some valuable tips on how to date your plane, and identify the differences between ,models. I loved it. It's a charming and hands-on demonstration on exactly how to restore an old Stanley -type metal hand plane. Perhaps Conover's most memorable comment is that we don't really own these old planes but are merely custodians of them. I wish he would do another one on the same topic for old wooden planes and so-called cross-over planes that have both wood and metal. And wait 'till you see how well it works after he's done with it!
