Richard Raffan, the great Australian turner, shows how to make a classic, graceful bowl on the lathe. In this video you'll learn how to make a light, "balanced" bowl that feels good in the hand.
Raffan shows how to get the shape you want and how to judge a bowl's wall thickness as you work. He demonstrates face-plate, gouge and scraper techniques, including grips for roughing-out, shear-cutting, "back-cutting" with a steep-fluted bowl gouge, detailing, and smoothing convex and concave surfaces with scrapers. Raffan also shows you how to sand on the lathe and how to finish with oil and wax.
